Born in 1919 in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, D.K.Pattammal received her training in Carnatic vocal music from Ambi Dikshitar, T.L.Venkatarama Iyer, P.Sambamoorthy and Vidyala Narasimha Naidu. She acquired a large repertoire of contemporary compositions from Papanasam Sivan and Koteshwara Iyer.

In a richly active career spanning five decades, Pattammal has performed widely within the country and abroad. She was one of the earliest classical singers to lend her voice for playback singing in films. Among her prominent students was the eminent vocalist D.K.Jayaraman.

D.K.Pattammal received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1962 and the Padma Bhushan in 1971. For her contribution to Indian music, D.K.Pattammal was elected Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1992.
