Kishan Maharaj

 
Kishan Maharaj was born in Varanasi in 1923. He received his training in the Tabla from his illustrious uncle Pandit Kanthe Maharaj. He gave his first major public performance at the age of eleven. Under the tutelage of his Guru, he achieved equal proficiency in providing accompaniment for vocal and instrumental music as well as Kathak dance.

One of the foremost Tabla players, Kishan Maharaj has accompanied almost all the leading musicians and dancers of north India in the last few decades. He has also been acclaimed as an outstanding soloist. His duets with other eminent masters of the Tabla and the Mridangam have added a new dimension to Indian instrumental music.

Kishan Maharaj has been honoured by the uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi. He received the Padma Shri in 1973 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani instrumental music in 1984.
