R.K.Singhajit Singh & Charu Sija Mathur

 
An eminent Manipuri dancer, R.K.Singhajit singh was born in imphal in 1932 in a distinguished family of traditional artists. He received training in Manipuri dance from Guru Amubi Singh, Guru Thambal angou Singh and Guru Chaoba Singh. He was also trained in Pung-playing.

An outstanding performer and choreographer of Manipuri dance, Singhajit singh has been the director and lead dancer of the Triveni Ballet since 1963. He has composed twenty dance-dramas and other choreographic works show an effective blend of various elements of Manipuri dance and martial arts. He has performed widely in India and abroad and has received several honours including the Sahitya Kala Parishad Award of Delhi and the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Award (1975). A fellow of the Manipur State Kala Academy, he has been conferred the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1984).

Charu Sija Mathur was trained in Manipuri dance by R.K.singhajit Singh at Triveni Kala Sangam. Together with her teacher and mentor, she has been engaged in rigorous practice and teaching of the art, performing traditional as well as experimental works. She has been the lead female dancer of the Triveni Ballet for many years, and has performed widely in India and abroad. She is a recipient of the Sahitya Kala Parishad Award.
