Urmila Nagar
A
senior Kathak dancer and teacher, Urmila Nagar is a prominent representative
of the Jaipur gharana of Kathak. She received training in the art initially
from Guru Kundanlal Gangani and later received advanced training from
Pandit Sunder Prasad. She also learnt Hindustani music from Bashir Ahmed
Khan, Dilip Chandra Vedi and Siddheshwari Devi.
An early product of Kathak Kendra, Delhi, Urmila Nagar has been performing for about three decades and is reputed as a leading exponent of the art. Her style of presentation is traditional and expansive and she particularly excels in nritta and dramatic compositions. She is also a regular broadcaster of semi-classical music and is among the few Kathak dancers who continue the practice of rendering the songs themselves during performance. She has also adapted the folk music of Rajasthan for Kathak.
She
has been honoured by the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi. She is currently
a senior Guru at Kathak Kendra, Delhi.
