KALAKSHETRA
COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS
|
A product of the pre-independence renaissance of Indian culture,
Kalakshetra was set up in 1936 by Rukmini Devi Arundale. With
a sprawling on the beach at Tiruvanmiyur near Madras, it has developed
into an institution of international renown in the fields of Bharatanatyam,
Carnatic music and Kathakali. Allied arts and crafts are also
taught here.
From
its inception eminent artists and teachers have been on the Kalakshetra
faculty, including the musicians Tiger Varadacharya, Veena Krishnamacharya,
Mysore Vasudevacharya, Karaikudi Sambasiva Ayyar, Budalur Krishnamurti
Sastri, Papanasam Sivan and M.D.Ramanathan, the Bharatanatyam
gurus Pandanallur Meenakshisundaram Pillai, Mylapore Gowri Amma
and of course Rukmini Devi, and the Kathakali master Chandu Panikar.
Under
guidance of such teachers, Kalakshetra has produced a large number
of highly proficient dances, many of them have attained eminence
in the field as dancers and teachers – establishing the
Kalakshetra style of Bharatnatyam. The dance-dramas produced by
Kalakshetra are also an important contribution in Bharatnatyam,
and some of them are known as landmarks in this centre.
Kalakshetra
is now fully funded by the Government of India, and the former
president of India, R.Venkataraman, is its President. |
| KERALA
KALA MANDALAM |
|
Founded in 1930 by Vallathol Narayana Menon, Kerala Kalamandalam
has done pioneering
work in the teaching of Kathakali, Kutiyattam, Mohiniattam, Thullal
and Panchavadyam. Eminent masters of Kathakali have been gurus
on the Kalamandalam faculty, including Guru Kunchu Kurup, Ambu
Panicker, Koppan Nair, Pattikkamthodi Ramunni Menon, Kavalappara
Narayanan Nair, Kadambur Gopalan Nair, Ganacharya Swamikutty Bhagavathar,
M.R.Venkita Krishna Bhagavathar and Kuttan Bhagavathar.
Kalamandalam
is funded by the government of Kerala, and offers Diploma and
Post diploma of one to six years courses in various disciplines.
The training is intensive and includes instruction in Sanskrit,
kavyas and plays. Kalamandalam also conducts seminars, publishes
boks and attaprakarams and a journal. |
JAWAHARLAL
NEHRU MANIPUR DANCE ACADEMY |

A constituent unit of Sangeet Natak Akademi, Jawaharlal Nehru
Manipur Dance Academy is the leading institution in the country
for teaching of Manipuri dance. Established in 1954, it offers
several comprehensive courses in Manipuri dance, music and allied
subjects like Lai Haroba. The courses are planned as a foundation
for professional artists. The institution has on its staff teachers
of eminence. It also has a Production Unit which is the repertory
company of the Academy. Performances by artists of the Academy
have featured in major national and international festivals. Masters
of the Manipuri dance and music traditions such as Maisnam Amubi
Singh, Hoabam automba Singh, Atombapu Sarma, Abhiram Sarma, Kaliadaman
Singh, Rajani Maibi, Khetri Tombi Devi among others have been
associated with the institution.

KUCHIPUDI
ART ACADEMY AND GURU VEMPATI CHINNA SATYAM |
|
The most renowned artist of the Kuchipudi dance tradition and
pioneer in the field, Guru Vempati Chinna Satyam was born in 1929
in a family of traditional dancers of Kuchipudi. He was trained
in the art by Tadepalli Perayya, Pasumarthy Kondala Naidu and
his cousin Vempati Peda Satyam. He was subsequently a disciple
of guru Vedantam Lakshminarayana Sastri under whose guidance he
developed into a complete artist. As a young dancer he played
many important roles in Kuchipudi Yakshaganas. Later he moved
to Madras where in 1963 he established the Kuchipudi Art Academy.
He has been
working there for the last 34 years, and has made a substantial
contribution to Kuchipudi dance as a teacher and choreographer.
He has been pioneering work in shaping Kuchipudi as a solo dance.
The dance-dramas performed by his group have traveled all over
the world and have won acclaim for himself and for Kuchipudi dance.
His numerous disciples include well-known dancers such as Sobha
naidu, Manju Bhargavee, Chandrakala, Bala and Shashikala.
Guru Vempati
Chinna Satyam has been Asthana Natyacharya of the Tirumala Tirupati
Devasthanam and has received awards and titles including the Kala
Prapoorna from Andhra University, a D.Litt. from Sri Venkateswara
University, the title Bharatkala Prapoorna from Andhra Pradesh
Nrutya Academy and the Kalidas Samman of Madhya Pradesh. He was
honoured with the Sangeet Natak akademi Award in 1981.
The Kuchipudi
Art Academy is the premier institution for training in Kuchipudi
dance. With its dance halls, library and hostel the Academy functions
as a residential school offering a four year intensive training
course. Students are taught dance and dance theory, music and
Sanskrit. The Academy conducts free programmes for poor students
and promotes them as solo performers. Deserving students are offered
scholarship and trained as teachers. The Academy is financially
supported by the Government of India and Sangeet Natak Akademi.

ODISSI
RESEARCH CENTRE |
|
The Odissi Research Centre, an autonomous institution of the Government
of Orissa, is devoted to the cause of Odissi dance and music and
is conducting research in various facets of Orissa’s rich
traditions. It was established in 1986 as the Odissi Research
Wing of the Orissa Government; since 1987 students have been enrolled
as resident trainees, and have been to intensive training. Eminent
gurus including Kelucharan Mohapatra, Bhubaneswar Mishra, Balakrishna
Das, Markandeya Mohapatra, Kashinath Puja Panda, Gopal Chandra
Panda and others have been associated with the institution over
the years.
The Centre
has conducted research in champu and chhanda and has brought out
publications including Odissi Dance Path finder. It has branches
in Berhampur, Rourkela, Puri and Sambalpur. Currently Damodar
Hota, Deepak Kumar Basu and Kanduri Chara Behara are among the
teachers at the Centre. Kumkum mohanty, a renowned dancer, heads
the institution as its chief executive.
Kumkum Mohanty
is among the seniormost disciples of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra
and was trained initially at Kala Vikash jendra, Cuttack. She
gained early fame as dancer, excelling in her rendering of asthapadis,
and danced lead roles in her guru’s choreographic productions.
She has been honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR CARNATIC MUSIC |
| The
International Foundation for Carnatic Music (IFCM) is a non-profit
organisation whose main motto is 'Service to Music; Service through
Music.' The IFCM not only endeavours to foster one of the world's
greatest melodic art forms - Carnatic music, but also strives
to promote mutual appreciation, goodwill and peace between peoples
of diverse countries and cultures. It has constantly aimed to
de-regionalise and de-religionise culture and has sought to benefit
people from all walks of life.
Founded
by Ravikiran in 1990, with the musical legend Semmangudi Srinivasa
Iyer as its first president, the IFCM has embraced an imaginative
3-E formula of Exposure, Education and Excellence, and has pioneered
several projects that have set benchmarks in the world of culture.
It has endeavoured to complement the work of like-minded organisations
and has collaborated with many of them in areas of joint interest.
The IFCM's primary objectives are:
To
promote and project the system through concerts, lecture-demonstrations
and workshops.
To set up Centres for Musical Excellence in various parts of the
world with a standardised syllabus accompanied by qualitative
guidance.
To create Departments of Carnatic music in important Universities
in the world.
To encourage research in areas of artistic innovation such as
Melharmony as also areas of historical significance, such as works
of composers like Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi and areas of social
relevance, like musopathy.
To present and preserve music through publications and audio,
visual and electronic productions.
To recognise and bestow awards on musicians, artisans and others
who have served the music field over the years.
To promote talented artistes with performing opportunities and
enable them to train under great masters.
To use music to serve society in various ways through charity
shows or productions.
To carry out any other activities to facilitate the above objectives. |

LASYA
AKADEMI OF MOHINIYATTAM
Lasya
Akademi of Mohiniyattam is a renowned Mohiniyattam institution
that offers rigorous scheduled training. Founded by Pallavi Krishnan
in 1995, Lasya Akademi is known for producing well-rounded students,
who have theoretical and practical experience in the art of Mohiniyattam.
Students gain knowledge and experience from a variety of sources,
including eminent scholars and experts in the field, who offer
regularly scheduled workshops throughout the year. Pallavi believes
that to produce high quality dancers, a combination of traditional
schooling (guru-shishya parampara) and an open attitude gives
the students the disciplined training they need while still allowing
them to explore their own creativity. This helps to ensure that
the dancers who graduate from Lasya Akademi are educated and self-confident.
Additionally, short-term, customized intensive courses are available
to those who desire them. Short-term courses are meant to encourage
students from other locales to pursue their passions and interests
in dance. Lasya Akademi warmly welcomes students from all backgrounds.
Pallavi Krishnan is the Artistic Director of Lasya Akademi of
Mohiniyattam.
Lasya Akademi functions in both Thrissur (Trichur) of Kerala and
in Kolkata (Calcutta).

Noopura
Institute of Indian Classical Dance and Music
Noopura Institute of Indian Classical Dance and Music was established
in 1970 under the leadership of Dr. K. R. Kurup. Noopura periodically
modified the Traditional art form of Kerala ‘Mohiniyattam',
under the patronage of Sri. Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and Smt.
Kalamandalam Kallyani Kutty Amma.
Under
Noopura there is a special centre for Kathakali in memory of late
Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and have been giving Kalamandalam Krishnan
Nair memorial award for the past five years, to various experts
of Kathakali. There is a Noopura award from this year onwards
in memory of Kalamandalam Kallyani Kutty Amma. Even now, they
have been giving awards for students who come out first in state
school’s youth festival.
Noopura
also conducts classes for Veena, Violin, Guitar, Keyboard, Piano
and Mrudangam etc.

| Art
Vision was founded in the year 1996 by Smt. Ileana Citaristi along
with a group of artists belonging to different disciplines such
as dance, painting , cinema and literature who wanted to have
a common ground for sharing experiences and creative ideas. During
these years Art Vision has already conducted several events which
reflect its multi disciplinary nature. In October 1996 a two days
“Festival of Arts for Environment” was organised at
the Adivasi ground in Bhubaneswar. Here different forms of art
like painting, photography , dance and theatre were brought together
to express through their respective medium their concern about
environmental issues.
A three days “Festival of films on performing and visual
arts” has been organised by Art Vision yearly since 1996.
This Festival is unique in its kind and has become a much awaited
event in the cultural scene of the State Capital. During this
Festival artists and students of art from various disciplines
find an opportunity to meet and witness cinematic masterpieces
on the life and work of classical dancers, musicians, painters
and actors. More than forty films have already been shown directed
by eminent directors such as Satyajit Ray, Mani Kaul, Kumar Sahani,
Gautam Ghosh and Gulzar.
Besides this, Art Vision is also organising cultural functions
in its own mini-auditorium situated on the picturesque bank of
the sacred Bindu Sagara lake in the old Bhubaneswar. During these
functions, less known art forms such as ‘gotipua’
dance, ‘das katia’, ‘raas leela’, ‘Radha
prema leela’ and ‘Ram leela’ folk theatre have
been presented.
Art Vision has organised the special package of films on dance
called ‘Dance with the Camera’ as part of the Mumbai
International Film Festival 2002 and 2004 and since the last two
years has been the main architect behind the Kalinga Mahotsav
event, a national festival of martial arts, which is taking place
at the foothill of the Shanti Stupa in Dhauli Giri, situated on
the outskirt of Bhubaneswar.
Art Vision Dance Academi runs dance classes in Odissi and Mayurbhanji
Chhau conducted by renown dancer Smt.Ileana Citaristi for local
students and workshops for visiting students, for whom hostel
facilities are provided in the same compound. The Academy is receiving
salary grants for three artists and for the Guru from HRD Ministry
since 1998. Regular Odissi dance programs are presented by the
Academi students for group of visiting tourists, who have the
opportunity to round off their visit to the historical temples
of old Bhubaneswar by witnessing a live performance of this lyrical
dance in its natural settings. The senior dance students of the
Academi have already presented performances in various important
cities of India like Bangalore, Mysore and Vijayawada. |
