Pallavi Krishnan

Pallavi Krishnan is a leading exponent of Mohiniyattam. She is an alumnus of both Santiniketan (Viswa Bharati University) and Kerala Kalamandalam. She is also a graduate in Bio Science from Burdwan University of West Bengal.

Initially Pallavi was trained in Kathakali and Mohiniyattam under Guru Kalamandalam Sanakaranarayanan at Santiniketan. Her passion for Mohiniyattam led her to advanced training under Guru Kalamandalam Leelamma at Kerala Kalamandalam. She continued her training under the guidance of Guru Bharati Shivaji and Guru Kalamandalam Kshemavati. She was awarded the Scholarship of the Govt. of India, Dept. of Culture, for higher studies in Mohiniyattam. She also received the fellowship of the Dept. of Culture to popularise Mohiniyattam by choreographing new items set to Sopana Sangeetam (the traditional music of Kerala). She is an ‘A’ grade artiste of the Doordarshan (national television) of India and a recognised artiste of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) of Government of India.

She has performed and conducted Mohiniyattam residencies extensively in India and abroad in countries such as Australia, Canada, Poland, Austria, Switzerland and UK.

As an artiste, Pallavi has developed a style marked by creativity in her performance. Pallavi is equally at ease in exhibiting both adavu and abhinaya. Today, she is one of the most sought after Mohiniyattam performers and a trendsetter for many young dancers the world over, motivating them to take up this art form seriously.

Pallavi is the recipient of the national grant of the Department of Culture, Government of India, for group choreography of Tagore’s Rituranga (Seasons) in traditional Mohiniyattam style set to Rabindra Sangeet and Sopana Sangeetam (music of Kerala). This choreography was successfully presented in several places in India and abroad. Her new thematic group choreography is Salabhanjika, based on feminine feelings, which earned excellent reviews when presented at various centres in India.

Pallavi is currently collaborating with Kavalam Narayana Panikkar for new choreographies in Mohiniyattam with Sopana Sangeetam.

Since 1994, she is the Artistic Director of Lasya Akademi of Mohiniyattam, a centre for the promotion and professional training in Mohiniyattam, at Trichur (Kerala) with a branch in Kolkata (West Bengal). She is grooming a good number of talented young dancers in the art of Mohiniyattam through her institution. Students from abroad also come to Lasya Akademi for professional training in the art of Mohiniyattam.
