R.Srinivasan hail from a family of musicians. His grand mother, late Smt. Kalyani Varadarajan (retd. Staff artist-AIR, Mumbai) was a great vainika, violinist and a composer of carnatic music in Telugu, Sanskrit and Tamil. He has grown up with the sound of music. His parents used to play recordings of both carnatic and Hindustani music, which gave him great exposure to the classical music, since the age of 4, and he developed a taste for it. He started learning mridangam at the age of 11, and at the age of 13, received the C.C.R.T scholarship.

Srinivasan's first performance was in a small temple to play for a veena recital. Apart from playing Mridangam, he has also acquired competency in playing the Kanjeera and have performed along with senior mridangists.

R.Srinivasan has given lecture demonstrations in various universities in USA and Canada on the art of playing the mridangam, giving emphasis on fine accompaniment.
